Indeed. And anyone who says "well they're not written as well"... bro. Naruto isn't written worth dick, but people love the shit out of him. Don't even try that.

Don't forget Sasuke. *vomits*

Well I mean I didn't want to get eaten alive by angry fans, but idek, is Sasuke even a thing anymore /stopped watching before the timeskip ahhhh

[identity profile] smittenlotus.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
You made the right choice. He's pretty much taken over the entire series now to the point all Naruto cares about is redeeming him even though he's become a murderous psychopath who's tried to kill his own friends quite a few times by now.

ssssssssssssigh ): idk, I tried to go back and watch it, but my tastes have changed so drastically that I just want to tell everyone to shut up. I'm like how did I like this at 15?

[identity profile] mirrorgrim.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
And to add on that all he wants to do is "MURDER THE LEAF VILLAGE REVENGE AHHH" Even though Itachi wanted the exact opposite for him.

Oh, he also tried to murder his girlfriend, so there's that also. Lol.

Sasuke...doesnt have a girlfriend.

But I despise him, Idk why I'm here.

Karin was basically his love interest. I know the shippers hate it, but there you go.

[identity profile] margerydaw-s2.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
More like the other way around. He didn't seem to have any interest in her at all. Or...anyone for that matter.

IMO, it's usually not about "well written" or not, but if they have important and/or gut-wrenching parts in the story.

Last I read Naruto, the most interesting storylines and the saddest pasts all belonged to guys. Except, uh, maybe Hinata? But I still think Neiji bested her at angst.

[identity profile] formula-410.livejournal.com 2012-04-05 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Neji bests everyone at angst, man. Everyone.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read this, because I probably would have spit it out. XD

I like Neji and all, but yeah, his angst levels can be kind of ridiculous. Though I think Gaara could give him a run for his money.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Hinata....

"Naruto! I'm going to sacrifice myself for you because I love you! Now that my confession is out of the way I'll just disappear for the rest of this arc and barely make an appearance in the next one. Oh and you'll never think about this again after Pain, right? Hehe"

Is basically how I saw that go.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with you there, although it's not just about well-written. It's about interestingly-written too: if a story gives all of the guys interesting and exciting traits, and interesting and exciting storylines, and doesn't give the female characters either, then I can't blame fans for not being as interested in the female characters.
But seriously though I do agree with you and the OP.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about well-written, it's about who's writing it and what traits get prioritized. A male character is more likely to have his gender be a part of who he is, but not the whole deal or even the first obvious thing- what makes him who he is as a person, what goals he wants to accomplish, what struggles he's dealing with, those come first. Female characters, especially if written by men and/or if they're in a story mostly pushed at men (though not always) are more likely to be defined by their gender and which men have important roles in their lives. And to be honest, it's a lot harder to develop a personal connection with a character that's there to be somebody's love interest or somebody's sister or mom and who doesn't seem to want any more for her own life than that role.

I'm not saying this as someone who wants an excuse just to fangirl over men and ignore the women. I prefer reading about women. Hell, I'm a femslasher, But in most of my favorite fics that center around female characters, the author had to do a fuckton of filling in the blanks to even get some approximation of what these characters are like when their men aren't around. I mean, it sucks when you want to read about ladies and nobody's writing about ladies. I know that- it's even harder to find people who want to write about ladies interacting with other ladies! But don't put all the blame on the fandom side. Sure, fandom usually isn't helping anything, but look at what they're working with, too.

Shrug, we must be in different fandoms, then, because none of that really applies to the ones I'm in. It's more a complete devaluation of femininity and feminine struggles, as compared to more traditionally masculine ones.

[identity profile] drunken-clowns.livejournal.com 2012-04-06 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
You mean that if a female character fits any stereotypes about women or has any traditionally feminine interests/traits, she's "too girly" and "not a strong female character"?

There's some of that in my fandoms too, and that's absolutely not a thing I'm in favor of.
