I'm sorry, OP, but that makes no sense. It's not like no one on this side of the pond has read the books or anything and knows the John/Sherlock relationship is not romantic in ACD canon. It's not like no one on this side of the pond has seen Sherlock Holmes or any other related media, where occasionally the subtext is played up but canonically they're not banging.

My only potential problem with Elementary is that Lucy Liu's character won't be a badass Army doctor, and only because how awesome would that be if she was?

Dude. This x1000.

For me, Watson being both a soldier and a doctor is as much a part of the character as Holmes being a consulting detective/recovering addict. And female soldiers are so under-represented in the media. Why couldn't they have done this? Was it because it was too similar to the BBC version? It's not like they were the ones to invent that Watson character archetype! Even the mouse!Watson had returned from service in Afghanistan. A MOUSE!

She's an ex-army doctor, isn't she? (Could be wrong there, I vaguely remembered reading something about it) We don't know the circumstances of the plot details regarding her termination so I think it's unfair to judge how badass or not badass she is based on the limited amount of information we have about the show at this point.

Also, Dawson is not mouse!Watson just as Basil isn't mouse!Holmes, but I get your point.

Yes, I distinctly remember reading that she was an ex-army doctor.

ex-doctor, not ex-army

She's a surgeon who lost her license after a patient died. I guess that doesn't rule out military service necessarily, but she hasn't been declared ex-military at all. I could've sworn it was definite that she was just a civilian doctor as well, but I haven't been paying super close attention.
