Did Haymitch actually kill anyone though? I don't think he did.

This. He used the forcefield to his advantage in that the girl attacking didn't know what would happen when she threw her weapon, but not only was that in self defense, he also never touched the weapon and never actively tried to kill her.
My interpretation.

I stand corrected. I honestly didn't remember that. But, at any rate, I'd still call that self-defense. He didn't go looking for them and you can bet they were trying to kill him.

yep, she still would've died even if he hadn't known that the axe would pop back up in that spot, as long as he'd ducked and stayed down.
