Sometimes the story being told doesn't need to be that long, though. There are plenty of excellent fics out there that are shorter. I love epic-length fic, too, but I can also appreciate the shorter stuff. You're missing out.

THIS. Not every story (IRL or online) needs to be War and Peace to convey a great/emotional message.

Probably my biggest pet peeve is when a story isn't told in a length appropriate to it. I'm fine with epic length for epic stories, but I despise padding and dilly-dallying. I'm also frustrated by huge ideas shoved into tiny packages, though it doesn't bother me as much as lack of brevity.

This is the truth! Epic idea needs an epic length. I've seen people try to tell a complicated situation in a short fic and it reads like a synopsis. Very unsatisfying. At the same time, sometimes the writer runs out of idea and keeps writing, and it's like the plot goes no where for chapter after chapter. Then it really does get boring. I see that a lot when the writer doesn't have a clue how to resolve their story, or they are just too much in love with it they don't want it to end -- so they pad.

I think you get different things out of different lengthed fics. I like worldbuilding and character arcs which is why I gravitate to longer fics. Other people just want short intense emotional vignettes, and short fic is awesome for that.

This. It's really important that the length works well for the amount of story there is to tell.

And I'd argue that if you can't hit the right length, it's probably better to make people to wish your story was developed more than to lose their interest because the story went on too long and lost direction.

Neither is good, but I don't think too long is any better than too short.
