Wow. Well, no one even misses your readership, I'm sure. I'd prefer not to have my fic read by someone who doesn't appreciate it anyway.

You're missing out.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That last time I was in a LJ fandom I "discovered" Drabbles and I was baffled by how lazy that fandom was. Seriously 100 word 'fics'? What the hell? The last thing I wrote was nearly 20k.

Then again I can't read anything unless it's done because I don't want the chance that they never finish it so I guess they take that idea to the extreme?

It's pretty much the contrary for me. I like well-written one-shots better than 50-chaptered fics. Even when the author is good, it gets boring after a while. Not to mention long fics that never get finished because the author isn't interested in the fandom anymore, which is understandable but very frustating for the reader nevertheless.

You're missing a lot, but if that's what you like, then *shrug*

[identity profile] box-life.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you write fic that you can hold this judgement?

Also, it's cool if you prefer longer fic and wish there was more of it, but is there some reason you have to insult the other stuff?

[identity profile] rocketgirl2.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
In a way, I agree with you because all of my (pretty short) fics aren't really, like, ~substance or anything.
But then again...sometime musings on something are really great and thought-provoking, so I like them more than longer fics anyway.

[identity profile] havemy-heart.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes the story being told doesn't need to be that long, though. There are plenty of excellent fics out there that are shorter. I love epic-length fic, too, but I can also appreciate the shorter stuff. You're missing out.

i (kind of) feel the same. i will read shorter fic, but if it's excellent, i always want more and am sad that it's over. so i tend to enjoy reading longer fic because it's more satisfying. on the other hand, i find that a lot of longer fic is really awesome until about halfway through, then starts going downhill (not always the case obviously), which is infinitely more disappointing. i just like reading good stuff, and the more of it the better.

[identity profile] straydog733.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I believe you are missing out on an incredible amount of work. My ideal length for a fic is about four or five chapters, not the big monster fics, but I have read some stunningly beautiful one-shots, ficlets, and even 100 word drabbles.

But to each their own. You can have your epic-ly large fics, and avoid haikus.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
...I once got a comment consisting solely of 'TL;DR' on something that was 3000 words long. People (dis)like what they (dis)like.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it takes incredible skill to tell a story in less than 2000 words. *shrugs* Some of the best fics I've ever read have been under 2k. You're missing out on a lot, anon.

[identity profile] otakugal15.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't usually read drabbles or short fics, but occasionally I'll find something that I like, especially if it's a well written piece for an under appreciated ship I happen to like. *looks at the lack of long McCoy/Uhura fic in the Nu!Trek fandom* ;~;

But, I do have to say that I MUCH prefer epic!length fic. It makes me feel as though I've found an actual novel for a ship and series I dearly love, so I get a week to myself and read the hell out of it.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-10 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
It's called fan fiction and thus the "fic" part. Any of it is fic, no matter how long or short. Never heard of the 6 word story?

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I know fic is fic, whether it's 10 words or 500,000. There's a big difference between meta (musing) and fic. And I'm not enough of an ass to think that long fics are intrinsically better than short ones. That said, yeah, under about 7,000 doesn't seem worth the click most of the time. I like novel length stories best.

lol I've seen +100k fics that were the shittiest things ever written and some ~1k fics that were absolutely beautiful

your loss I guess

length =/= quality

[identity profile] intrigueing.livejournal.com 2012-04-10 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I consider epic fic and short fic to be completely different animals. Well-written short fic, especially when it doesn't contradict canon, is like a wonderful peek into the characters' lives/thoughts/whatever in between canon scenes, or a pointlessly enjoyable, often smutty "what-if" scenario that you write simply because you like thinking about it -- like putting a John Dorian-style fantasy into words. Epic length fic is, well, totally different -- telling an original story using non-original characters, building on pre-existing canon either by incorporating canon events into your story or by pointedly avoiding canon events with an AU.

So I think the whole "I don't consider anything short to be fic" spiel is bizarrely narrow-minded. It's like comparing a novel or a feature film to a short story or a TV episode: why would you do it?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
It's a little unfair to judge people as lazy just because they enjoy writing something different than what you enjoy reading, but, as someone whose rule of thumb is "only complete fics over 10k", I can sort of understand where you're coming from. I, personally, have a really hard time getting into a story if it isn't on the long side.

the gents are related in that their heights symbolize fic size

i actually agree with this, but alas my fandom seems to have a deep rooted hatred for longfic

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-11 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I love long fics <3

NGL, I tend to overlook fics under 5k. The only time I read fics under 5k is when 1) the ship is rare and I'm desperate, 2) I'm in the mood to read something short (which is rare), and/or 3) the summary sounds amazing. Most of the fics I read are often over 10k, though I generally look for fics 20k+.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I like fic of all length, but I tend to skip over porn if it's less than about 5, 000 words. When it's like that, it's usually not enough to get me going :( but that's looking for fic for a very specific purpose.

Pretty sure your "these gents not relate" is bullshit.

Because by using that picture, you just made the analogy of "short fic doesn't equal to real fic" therefore "short people don't equal to real people"?

Really, OP? Really?
