If your lives are equal in value it's not more morally wrong to kill them to save yourself than it is to allow them to kill you.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:36 am (UTC)(link)There is nothing wrong with fighting and even killing in self defense. You are not making that choice, circumstances have made that choice for you.
I am saying that their lives are less important to me than my own
Darn tootin'! The only person I can count on to make sure that I'll be okay is me. Particularly when I have responsibilities to others like Katniss did.
If you want to argue that you could only justify defense in this way, fine, whatever. However, you can't condemn people for killing in defense. Their choice is to die or to do everything in their power to stop it.

Looking down on people for the fact in a kill or be killed situation they'd chose their own life over someone else's is ore than a little condescending.
Especially since you said you'd kill to defend someone else. You apparently think it's okay to decided whose life is more valuable as long as it's between two other people, but look down on people who would make the exact same choice only involving their own lives? I actually think that's worse. You at least have a reason to pick your own life over a strangers, but what right do you have to decide which of two strangers is more deserving of life?

Depending on how far you take this philosophy, it can become very difficult. For example, if all life is equal, is it okay to kill an animal that's threatening you? Is it okay to kill insects because they're an annoyance? If they're poisonous? And if you do value those lives less, does that mean you don't actually believe all life is equal? I'm not picking a fight -- for me, at least, these are real ethical questions to consider. And for many people, complete pacifism, even just with humans, can be a very difficult moral stance to stick to.
And while I agree with you about choice, I don't think people always feel like they have a choice when they're in a life or death situation.
I don't think there's anything wrong with taking the philosophy that all life is equal to the conclusion you're taking it to. I can have a lot of respect for pacifism. But I don't agree that believing all life is equal means that killing in self-defense is necessarily wrong.

I'd like to think I could spend the entire time just hiding from everyone else as they pick one another off, but sooner or later, I'm going to run into someone who's going to try to kill me, and I genuinely have no idea how I will react.

But at the same time I wonder if I would be too terrified to do it and just end up getting killed anyway.

The point is, no matter what morals we hold in our hearts, we can't help our baser instincts - there's nothing to be ashamed of in knowing you're willing to protect yourself. Katniss didn't kill because she enjoyed it, or because she had no morals. She volunteered because of love - to save her sister from being killed or being forced to kill. She fought because she wanted to live, and she wanted to return home. Blame the people who forced her into that situation, 100%. These kids are completely innocent victims of circumstance.
