By that logic their life isn't more valuable than yours.

If your lives are equal in value it's not more morally wrong to kill them to save yourself than it is to allow them to kill you.

All lives are equal. It is not morally okay, though, for me as the person making the choice to put my life before theirs. It also isn't okay for them to choose to put their lives before mine. I believe in putting others before one's self. Doesn't mean I'm not important, but if I kill someone to save myself I am saying that their lives are less important to me than my own. I can't control what choice others would make in that situation, but I can control what choice I make.

DA

There is nothing wrong with fighting and even killing in self defense. You are not making that choice, circumstances have made that choice for you.

I am saying that their lives are less important to me than my own

Darn tootin'! The only person I can count on to make sure that I'll be okay is me. Particularly when I have responsibilities to others like Katniss did.

If you want to argue that you could only justify defense in this way, fine, whatever. However, you can't condemn people for killing in defense. Their choice is to die or to do everything in their power to stop it.

But you said you look down on people for making a different choice. That's entirely different than saying you wouldn't kill to save yourself.

Looking down on people for the fact in a kill or be killed situation they'd chose their own life over someone else's is ore than a little condescending.

Especially since you said you'd kill to defend someone else. You apparently think it's okay to decided whose life is more valuable as long as it's between two other people, but look down on people who would make the exact same choice only involving their own lives? I actually think that's worse. You at least have a reason to pick your own life over a strangers, but what right do you have to decide which of two strangers is more deserving of life?

I have a similar belief, that all lives are equal. But for me, this has led me to accepting that it's natural to value some lives more. In the grand scheme of things, there's nothing about my family that makes them more valuable than any other people on earth. In the grand scheme of things, I don't think they're more valuable than other animals. But they're more valuable to me. Similarly, my own life is valuable to me. It doesn't mean that I'm actually more valuable than others on an objective scale, and I expect that other people will also value their own lives and the lives of their loved ones. This is a natural feeling, and I think it's only a problem when you lack empathy.

Depending on how far you take this philosophy, it can become very difficult. For example, if all life is equal, is it okay to kill an animal that's threatening you? Is it okay to kill insects because they're an annoyance? If they're poisonous? And if you do value those lives less, does that mean you don't actually believe all life is equal? I'm not picking a fight -- for me, at least, these are real ethical questions to consider. And for many people, complete pacifism, even just with humans, can be a very difficult moral stance to stick to.

And while I agree with you about choice, I don't think people always feel like they have a choice when they're in a life or death situation.

I don't think there's anything wrong with taking the philosophy that all life is equal to the conclusion you're taking it to. I can have a lot of respect for pacifism. But I don't agree that believing all life is equal means that killing in self-defense is necessarily wrong.
