(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:31 am (UTC)(link)But yeah, I don't get why bi/something more complicated is never an option. I'll disagree with the "straight is NOT an option" part, especially in society (though there may be some of that in fandom, at least in certain circles), but in general I'm annoyed that there are very few characters in anything that have an orientation more complicated than can be summed up in one commonly-used-and-understood-by-everyone word.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 12:47 am (UTC)(link)EXACTLY. What makes it so interesting is that it's not a straight(lol) answer. It's more complicated than that. Real life is more complicated than straight or gay or bi.

tbh that part was meant to be about fandom, and a particular fandom I've been in especially(Supernatural).

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 01:11 am (UTC)(link)Exactly. In this case (at least from my point of view) there's such a big difference between what's actually happening onscreen and what's being said in interviews/the media that I'm starting to think the writers just don't want to invite any more controversy than they're already getting from this character/storyline and just figure "eh, we'll say he's gay, it's close enough". Honestly, I'm just glad (and surprised) that his wife isn't getting a ton of people claiming she's interfering with the gayness. As far as I can tell most fans actually seem to love her character and them as a couple, but it's still a new and really small fandom so I figure if the show goes on long enough it'll happen eventually, unfortunately.

Ah, yes. OBVIOUSLY Sam never loved Jessica and being with her was just a way to distract himself from the fact that he wanted Dean's dick!

(Anonymous) 2012-04-11 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)The new show GCB. I don't know if it's what the OP was talking about or not, but it's the first thing I thought of when I read the secret.
The character is married to a woman, ostensibly to hide the fact that he's gay (they live in a very conservative/religious area) and although it seemed like a pretty straightforward marriage of convenience at first, it's gotten a lot more complicated since then. According to the actor his interest in men is only sexual and doesn't mean anything, and his relationship with his wife is far more important. Their relationship isn't at all conventional, but it's really interesting and they work really well together. They ended up having sex in the most recent episode but they're trying to have a baby so that may be the only reason.
I think it just comes down to how you look at it. I tend to think of being gay as being emotionally/romantically interested in the same sex rather than only sexually, and in that case this character doesn't fit. Like I said before, I don't know that I'd call him bi because I think it's more complicated than that, but to me he's definitely not 100% gay.
