Who says Haymitch is a good person? I don't think he is. I'm a bit biased as I have a lot of discontent for alcoholics (no matter the circumstances) and that alone rubs me the wrong way. Although despite that he helps Katniss in the Games, I don't think he's that morally a good person. I'm sure the Games changed him. And really who's to say what one would do if they were in the position of being a tribute. I don't think Katniss wanted to kill anyone either, but her will to survive was stronger. She had to survive for her family which is what I think most tributes would feel (careers aside). Oh, and when she made her first kill it wasn't really to protect Rue or Peeta. It was to protect her own ass in the arena.

iirc Haymitch became an alcoholic because the Capitol killed his mother, brother, and girlfriend as punishment for outsmarting the arena to his advantage, so that's a bit harsh. And as pointed out above, nothing in the book suggests he killed anyone, he just manipulated his surroundings. It's possible he had managed to evade his competition and never hurt anyone until that final confrontation. I don't see him as a bad person.

Isn't judging Haymitch for being an alcoholic similar to OP judging people who'd kill to save themselves? Haymitch drinks because his family was killed by the Capitol and he watched a group of 23 kids die - one of them being a friend of sorts, or at least someone he knew - in front of him while he was the lone victor, then was forced to parade around Panem and see the families of the dead kids, then mentor a bunch of kids who ALL DIED - honestly, if I knew there was one way for me to numb all that pain and death in my life, I'd be drunk 24/7 too. It's a wonder Haymitch is still alive, considering how much he's been through in his life.
