Thank you.

I abhor double standards. Most of the people who label Dean as a misogynist wouldn't give a crap if he were a woman doing the same thing.

It's great that women are growing more confident in expressing their desires and attraction towards the opposite sex, but it's so stupid that when men do so now they're told they're misogynistic and sexist.

In an earlier F!S post, there was a comment by a male user saying that he was bashed on an SPN comm for saying he liked Jo's tits and wanted to sleep with her. =/ If it'd been a girl saying that she wanted to jump on Sam's probably massive cock, or commenting on the deliciousness Dean's ass and bow legs, I doubt anyone would have been so outraged.

This. Saying i wanna jump Dean's bones and isn't he pretty when he hurts and whoooo, yeah, Sam's tied up!! is all cool but Dean saying a cute, flirty waitress is cute is...misogyny.

I've hated it since it first started and the Dean!hate got so damn loud you couldn't hear much else.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you're right, there's ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE between a man treating a woman like an object and a commodity and a woman saying positive sexual things about a man!

Oh wait. No, there's a HUGE FUCKING DIFFERENCE you ignorant, sexist jerk. Like, several thousand years of objectification, commodification, degradation, and oppression worth of difference.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-04-14 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Object and commodity. Dean's selling women now? Wtf are you talking about. And i dunno if you've visited a kink meme lately, but the men are being pretty damn objectified over there.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
lol WOW are you stupid. Seriously, do I need to define what it means to objectify or commodify a woman now? Because that's pretty 101, no-shit-Sherlock stuff, but apparently you're actually as dumb as a rock-- if rocks could be sexist.

And lol. Oh NOES, men are being OBJECTIFIED on A SITE on the INTERNET! This is surely horrific and totally comparable to the institutionalized, normalized way society and men objectify, commodify and oppress women! OH WAIT.

Wow you're. Actually. Really disgustingly sexist. I'm out now, cos I just ate and you're making me sick, you stupid fuck.

OH NOES, a FICTIONAL CHARACTER IS FLIRTING WITH A FICTIONAL WOMAN!! OH NOES.
We're talking about A TV SHOW, not real life, in case you forgot. Good freakin' lord.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
lol because that's totes all I was talking about. Learn 2 read please.

Media: SHOCKINGLY IMPORTANT. REFLECTS AND INFLUENCES SOCIETY.

TAKE A FUCKING SOCIOLOGY CLASS YOU FUCKING IDIOT. YOU ARE LITERALLY ONE OF THE STUPIDEST PEOPLE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS ON LJ. OH MY GOD.

[personal profile] tabaqui 2012-04-14 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? Awesome. That means you don't want to talk to me anymore, right ? Please?

Jayzus god. Good. Bye.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-04-14 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
lol ciao, sexist asshole. Have fun being the most ignorant jackass I've ever had the displeasure of arguing with.

Oh, and yes, this reply is just because you didn't want me to reply anymore. Were I any less mature, I'd reply three more times out of sheer spite.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-15 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
I just had to come over and say I have to salute you for dealing with curseangel, especially after s/he exploded into such immaturity. A poor example of person, that one.

But much ♥ to you.

lol and you're such a charmer ♥ jackass.

Yet more "omg how DARE a woman get angry when someone is being an ass wrt sexism!" bullshit. Fuck offffff.

I just wanted to say that I agree with most, if not all of what you are saying here. I have never understood how Dean is a misogynist for having casual sex (is his sex life for most of the show indicative of a healthy psyche? NO, but he is not supposed to be a paragon of mental health, he is presented as a flawed person). I also think about how he ended up with Lisa for a long time, when she was presented as having a very similar sexual background to his (wild). Did he ever once look down on her for it? No.

I get that Dean, Lisa, me, you and everyone operate in a wold that affords many, many privileges to men when it comes to sexual freedom, and that makes certain words or actions that either gender would perform have different weights and consequences. What I don't agree with this that living in a world that is rife with misogyny and having casual sex automatically makes a male a misogynist. I simply disagree. And I happen to be a straight female who once got into an argument with her ENTIRE 8th grade science class, including the disgusting pig of a (male) teacher, where everyone but me straight-up agreed that sexism and discrimination against females does not exist in the world today (or in the world at that point in time when I was in 8th grade). Why yes, I did grow up in a backward small town, thanks for asking.

Oh by the way, I also have internal misogyny for thinking it would be hot if Dean got it on with Castiel. Which to me is such a lovely fucking argument. Stupid girl, you can't decide for yourself what is sexy to you! If you want to see two hot guys make out, you hate yourself! Guys who want to watch lesbians don't, tho.

If someone wants to believe that I am a complete moron for believing this, well, OK. You would probably not be the first to hold such an opinion of me. But that's just like, your opinion, man.

What gets the most, i think, in this whole ridiculous thread, is this 'Dean objectifies women! Misogynist!!' thing, when pretty much EVERY SINGLE FAN GIRL EVER objectifies not only the *characters*, but the actual, live actors as well. And in ways that they might find pretty damn horrifying (kink meme, anyone?).

I don't think that Dean's an evil, horrible person for calling a demon in a woman's body a 'bitch' - he's facing the creatures that killed his family and screwed him over, repeatedly - that want to end the world as we know it. I doubt he's thinking about how he might hurt the possessed woman's feelings and pretty much only thinking about the creature that's trying to kill him.

I think Bela was the only actual woman who he ever called names, and she did her best to screw them both over - and succeeded several times! She *shot* Sam - probably a little worse than calling someone a name. I just...don't see 'hate woman and think they're inferior' behavior coming from Sam and Dean. Maybe Soulless Sam, but - no soul, for heaven's sake.

I've seen this argument since season one, i think, and it's still holds no water with me. And yes - casual sex with willing partners /= 'i think you are all disgusting sluts.' Nobody seems to think his partners are bad people for hooking up with *him* - he's just some evil, manipulative man who's *taking advantage of them*. Way to turn those women from consenting, independent adults into addled children who need a guiding hand.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Tony Stark's not misogynistic? Just wondering.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
He can be. It depends on the writer, I think, but I've never seen anything really severe at all (besides some instances of calling women "honey" or whatever without their consent*). But honestly, if I stopped watching/reading/playing anything with any misogyny ever on the part of any characters or the writers, I'd have nothing to watch.

Supernatural "sticks out" to me because it is seriously one of the most misogynistic series I've ever seen, overall. I can't conscience watching it because the sexism makes me ill -- it's a combination of heavy, heavy doses of sexism from the writers plus a lot of somewhat more minor sexism from the characters, and it drives me nuts.

I mean, Iron Man has Pepper Potts. Supernatural has a bunch of dead women stuffed into refrigerators and called b*tches and wh*res and a lot of nasty, nasty social messages buried in.

* I have not read all of the Iron Man comics, since I don't have infinite time and resources. This is out of what I've read, heard of, etc.

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
In what little I've seen of SPN, the brothers Winchester seem to be massively screwed up, particularly Dean. Sam strikes me as more reflective, though I don't know how much, not watching a lot. I don't feel like they're characters one would want to emulate (but might be interested in watching what happens to them in a "I wonder how many seasons they can survive" way). I saw a couple of episodes where Bobby seemed to love some sheriff or deputy who was a woman, and seemed to respect her in their interactions.

I just wondered at your use of Tony as an icon, given how upset you were about the topic of misogyny in SPN. I liked the Ironman movies, and Tony is fun to watch, but I wouldn't necessarily hold him up as a paragon of female championing any more than I would Arnold Rimmer (who is at least shown to be a perpetual loser) or Dean Winchester. Which is just IMHO of course.

[identity profile] curseangel.livejournal.com 2012-04-15 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
They are pretty screwed up, but that doesn't mean sexism is totally A-okay and should be excused. I mean, really. And the sheriff was a woman.. who was portrayed as basically domestic as soon as she started in with Bobby and was killed off shortly thereafter, so yeah, not exactly an example of their wonderful lack of sexism. All women in Supernatural die ugly deaths -- usually quick ones. Sometimes by fan request! And yeah, it's pretty gross stuff.

Oh, yeah, he's not really -- I just really love that expression of his, honestly. I don't choose my icons based on the characters being "paragons of female championing". Those are pretty few and far between. I'd be stuck with my four or five Kate Bishop icons for the rest of my online life.
