Haha, I love you, anon.

It is pretty hard to write Cas canon because there are a lot of lines that fandom sort of hung onto (aka "the voice is telling me I'm running out of minutes" or the "gripped you tight and raised you from perdition" line) and I feel like that has sort of influenced his fanon characterization, if that makes sense? So seeing a lot of that makes it hard to tell what's canon vs. fanon. Also, if you're not pretty strictly within the fanon guidelines, some of which leads you toward a parody!Cas, people are going to call OOC.

On the other hand, when you're writing porn it's pretty obviously not canon, so in some ways, you get a ~free pass on some parts of his characterization. Writing porn puts you in a totally different place with the dynamic of the characters, also, and I think that may be a part of it as well. I find the dynamic between everyone on Supernatural so hard to get right because it's very elaborate and romantic while not being straight-up romantic. How you write the characters' interactions also affects their characterization, so pornin' it up makes that bit easier to deal with, in my opinion. Also, he does come out with all that shit like "I gave everything up for you Dean" that makes the porn seem like not much of a stretch.

oh god I just wrote a mini-essay on why writing Cas in porn is easier than in gen fic; what is my life. D:

Awesome and inspirational -- that's what your life is. That explanation is fabulous in my book. :D

Haha, an inspiration to Cas fangirls everywhere? I can live with that, I guess. :P
Thanks! :D

It's SPN fandom. No one reads gen anyway.

I'm kidding. But really, Castiel has had such major characterization fluctuations during his run on the show that I don't think you can write him out of character, so long as you choose the right time frame.

I personally like finding new twists or perspectives to Cas' character because sometimes it's really fitting at different points of his life. Sometimes it works and I like it, and sometimes it doesn't.
With porn it becomes more of my specific preferences then.

I think it's completely okay if you explain that to people who ask why you don't write Cas in gen. Everyone has characters they have a hard time writing. I have more than a few friends, actually, who are completely uncomfortable writing Sam and Dean because they're afraid of butchering characterization, but even if I think they'll probably do great, I don't think less of them for avoiding it and I doubt anyone else does, either. With porn, it may be that it's more action of a specific nature oriented than what you might see in canon, so it's easier. Then again, porn is more difficult for me to write. *headdesk*

I remember I read a fic from a writer I really admire. She has very strong prose. Unfortunately there was a scene in the story where Cas were conversing and Cas was using sarcasm and almost sounding like Dean. It nearly ruined the story for me so I see what you're saying. Cas has occasions of sarcasm and wit but it's almost always unintentional. It's hard to keep that balance between cluelessness and millennia old intelligence in a gen fic. Porn on the other hand doesn't need dialogue except the fluff characters say to each other in the throes of passion, and like other posters have said it is already OOC so it doesn't matter.

obviously the solution is to write more porn!

in all seriousness, I know that feel bruv. =/

If it's any help, I always find myself coming back to this: http://architeuthis.dreamwidth.org/2208.html
It's a commentary an author wrote about his own fic, and some of it involves his deliberations about how to phrase Cas's lines, backed up by examples from the show. The fic itself is really go, and the commentary is interesting, definitely worth a read if you're trying to get a handle on writing the character.

*is really good

I find writing Cas to be incredibly hard. No shame in it, I think.
ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Castiel)

I just hope, Anon, that I am not one of those readers asking about your lack of Cas. I happen to be a strong fan of him, and even when I'm reading Wincest or Gen that are post-S4, I like to see a mention of him, even if's only small scenes.

But if you don't trust yourself to write him in Gen, keep going as you are.
