A bunch of kids forced to slaughter each other = hilarious, amirite?

Man, I hate this "I wasn't affected! I even laughed!" Olympics.

Same here. This is my least favorite kind of secret, mainly because it almost never happens to me (except in B-movies or really, really bad works). I think my least favorite one of these secrets was the "I freaking laughed during the furnace scene in Toy Story 3." Honestly, people who make these secrets come across as real jerks to me.

yeah, when the secrets are that they laughed and felt bad or they knew it wasn't appropriate, then that's one thing. Secrets like this seem like they're gloating about not having the expected reaction, and it comes off a bit ~special~.

[identity profile] hermione-vader.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. It's like, "I'm SO ABOVE emotions." No. No, they're not. I mean really.

I laughed at the furnace scene in Toy Story 3, but I don't think I want anybody finding that out. Yeah, I'm a bit insensitive, but I don't wanna wave a flag saying "ooh look at me, I'm so cool and edgy", like it's something to be proud of, precisely because I don't wanna come off as a jerk.

[identity profile] azelmaroark.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
Seriously, what the hell. Maybe I'm just ~sensitive, but this... kinda isn't something I'd brag about, tbh.

This. I don't know if that's exactly what this secret is about, but that's the reason I hate all the torture-porn movies. It's just a competition to see who's the most jaded and cynical and everyone high-fiving each other about it.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Like, are you really proud that you watched little kids get murdered and felt nothing? Really?

[identity profile] myrioddity.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
...uh. Laughter notwithstanding, if you had fun watching the movie, you had fun watching kids forced to slaughter each other. THG didn't become popular by asking audiences to spend a couple hours in Respectful Contemplation of Serious, Realistic Issues.

I would have felt bad about it if it wasn't all "Nameless extra is killed in a flurry of jittery, bad camerawork!". If we'd actually gotten to KNOW them (as in Battle Royale), we might have cared. As it was, I was just... bored. I couldn't identify with any of the characters (except maybe Gale and Haymitch - and I'm female).

[identity profile] myrioddity.livejournal.com 2012-04-16 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
also, both book & film conveniently avoided having Our Heroes forced to kill anyone who wasn't an unsympathetic asshole--or even kill anyone outright, except for Katniss killing that one guy who killed Rue.

Battle Royale had its own problems, but it felt more realistic in terms of the scenario. People who liked each other killed each other anyway; most characters were sympathetic and died just as horribly as the unsympathetic characters; everyone was freaking out and panicking all the time.

incidentally, I was laughing hysterically off & on watching the film of Battle Royale, but that was part of my reaction to it. "ahahahahahaaaaaa what even just happened jesus christ"
