If I choose to quote a song I quote the big relevant verse (or line) at the start, kind of like I did here (http://swayingtheflame.livejournal.com/122577.html). And then sometimes I link the actual song it's from/the version I would like people to hear.
But the days of songfics where the song lyrics heavily outweighed the actual word count of the story? I do not miss those at all. It takes a really good author to write a "proper" songfic-- one that really jives well with the lyrics of the song so that they don't appear jarring or annoying or just out of place.
But they got deletion-happy and that was SO ANNOYING. Cause they'd not do a damn thing about plagiarism but someone who quoted the president of the USA would get their 'fic deleted. Wat.
I hadn't thought of the "update" stuff, but years ago, there wasn't a review reply system at all (and then they implemented one and told everyone to reply in PMs instead of in the fics), and there wasn't an author or fanfic alert system, either. You pretty much had to keep checking back on your review page to see if the stories you'd reviewed had updated at all. Whereas with LJ, add favorite authors to your flist and check back to see if any more stories/chapters/etc are being posted!
That said, I think FFN's biggest downfall (and I hope you don't mind me saying this here, Simply) is the complete lack of community. You get community here at LJ, because you can reply to someone else and others can see that. Whereas on FFN if you see another review you want to "second"/+1 to or add comments to, you can't without PMing the person who did it, and then the author misses out on the great discussion that was, essentially, generated in part by their 'fic!
I post at LJ, DW aaaaaand FFN, and will maybe EVENTUALLY post to AO3 if I can figure it out. I just hate having my stuff in multiple places. I really built up my fic on FFN over the years and prefer to keep it that way. :/

(Anonymous) 2012-04-16 12:09 am (UTC)(link)And that's why some of us like it. If I wanted to interact with people, I would go out, not sit in front of the computer reading fanfiction.

Sometimes I just wanna read, not socialize, and I review and move on after reading a story. Other times I want to discuss characters/motives/etc, and that's what I do on LJ.
