I second the checking the number of chapter method. My general rule of thumb is that I only click on a fic if dividing the total wordcount by the number of chapters gives you an average chapter length of 1,000 words and up.

I also filter out anything under a certain word count, but I do it more because I like long fic better than short fic. I've found a lot of good short fics and ficlets on ff.net, but mostly when I'm browsing there, I'm looking for really long fic that I can download to my laptop or Nook (since there are apps and software programs that let you easily download fic from ff.net, but the only way to do it from LJ is to copy-paste the whole fic).
