That is how they actually used to do it on tv too, in ye olde dayes. It's just honouring that great old acting tradition. Until mid-nineties in the case of some US soaps. "The role of X will be played by Y in this episode" voiceovers at the start and everything,

Not just in ye olde days, when an actress was ill on Neighbours a year or two ago they used a backup with the voiceover. Same thing happened when an actor wanted to leave before a storyline was up.

Seems to me like it'd only be fans of a particular actor/actress who would be up in arms about it, a massive amount of viewers dgaf.

I thought it would be really weird to hear Martin voiced by somebody other than Benedict, but ultimately I didn't even miss him. I think Tom Goodman Hill did a really great job. I am glad they got Benedict to do his bits for Ottery St. Mary though. I think I really would have missed him there.

to quote Dr. Horrible "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do" I'm just glad he wasn't recording because he was doing another project but had lost his voice.

I had no idea he'd be replaced in that ep. I didn't even notice, not even when they were rattling through the actors' names.

Hah hah, I was gonna post the same thing. I haven't noticed, but IDK, maybe I haven't heard that ep, I haven't ever noticed Martin sounding different. I do love Cabin Pressure, but I didn't even know there was a fandom.
