Maybe try to explain calmly what your POV is? I mean, it's obvious that Finnick was forced into prostitution, but calling him a slut? It's like your friend wasn't reading the same books I did.

Seconding all of this.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
TALK TO YOUR FRIEND ABOUT THIS INSTEAD.

Stop making passive aggressive secrets about it when it's not going to solve anything.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
but passive-aggressive secrets are so entertaining!

[identity profile] nexttwentylove.livejournal.com 2012-04-26 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
lol what. Finnick was devoted to Annie, the rest were the clients forced upon him. This wasn't even subtext, how did your friend miss it?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
THIS

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
because obviously anyone that has sex with multiple partners any time ever no matter the circumstances is a dirty dirty slut face

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Has your friend read all the way through the books yet? I called him a slut affectionately before that part in Mockingjay... and then, ouch.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-26 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
How would it create drama to talk to your friend about a different opinion? I agree that it's offensive to call Finnick a slut (hello, he was a FORCED PROSTITUTE, and the majority of prostitutes irl are in a similar position, it's really gross!) but maybe your friend doesn't know all that, or realize how offensive they're being. But if you don't feel comfortable calling them out, you could always say "I don't agree, he's not a slut because x" (such as because he never WANTED to be a prostitute, he was in love with Annie, etc.)

This secret also makes me sad b/c I love Finnick =(

Yeah. With everyone else above. What books did your friend read because, uh, forced prostitution is not the same thing.
ext_19953: (benjamin linus you magnificent bastard)

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree, I think you SHOULD talk to your friend about it. Because this isn't just a "I ship this and you ship this" sort of discrepancy, they are actually missing something huge.

[identity profile] nomorefrostbite.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not only is your friend missing something pretty massive, misunderstanding the (very simply) written canon around the fairly major character of finnick... but they also seem to have an uncomfortably derogatory misunderstanding of the very real and very serious nature of sexual exploitation.

You really should talk to your friend, op, and educate them about this. If she is a real friend and a reasonable human being, your relationship should be stronger for having a proper sit down and talk about this topic.

It is important to be able to say "hey, this is not ok" to people, especially if they're your friends.

[identity profile] captain-loki.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
This.

Because it seems to be stepping over the line of an opinion on a character and an ignorance about something that is very real. Honestly, I think you owe it to your friend to try and understand where she is coming from and explain why it might not necessarily be the most healthy of opinions about Finnick's situation (and those of real people).

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
This, because it isn't just about fandom now, it's about clearly not understanding the concept of forced prostitution and why it's bad and why people affected by it are victims, not "sluts".

[identity profile] shukivengeance.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
This is a good comment.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
very well put. +1

[identity profile] silverau.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow. That's really gross.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Not the same fandom, but I am in some sorta-same situation than you with one of my friend. She's nice and all, but some things she says just make me cringe. Uh, I feel like an hypocrite to tell you to talk to her about it next time she says it (because I definitely didn't >.> I know it's easier to let it pass), but you should really do. Not saying anything won't change it, and she's not going to realize her fault by herself.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Calling anyone a slut is wrong. It's a word meant to degrade and shame someone; it's a hate word for women, just like whore is. That it can be also used to describe a male in the name of "equality" is just an excuse to keep continuing to use the word, with very much misogynistic roots, without being labeled a misogynist in everyone's eyes.
The fact alone that your friend uses such a word is problematic. It's worse that your friend uses the name to describe a victim.

Your friend is wrong, and you should tell them how and why.
If you can't tell them they're wrong to use such a word, at least tell them the word makes you uncomfortable and you'd prefer it if your friend didn't use it in front of you. That might be a start.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
You sound slutty.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
da

trolls these days are getting really lazy amirite

(Anonymous) 2012-04-27 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Since SJW rhetoric damn near trolls itself, we don't have to work as hard. Of course we're lazy when people are so easy to troll now.
