Tarot technically has *nothing* to do with the occult. It was a game from Italy called the Tarocchi. It developed into a divination tool, but it's roots are entirely neutral.
Also what's so wrong with 'occult' it's a nature based faith with spells(ritualistic prayer) and belief in multiple deities over a single deity. The negative 'occult' faiths(Satanism as an example... which was actually a satirical idea to begin with), are bullshit for the most part and have nothing to do with what the occult *actually* meant.

I didn't mean to imply I thought anything was wrong with pagan religion or practices that are derisively referred to as "occultic". Quite the opposite. I was just trying to say that I didn't think tarot necessarily had anything to do with any of that.

Sorry if *I* came of a tad abrasive, it's just a pet peeve of mine that the term 'occult' is used as a negative thing by...well... a lot of people be it media, fanatical Christians, etc. etc.
And you're right, tarot doesn't actually have anything to do with paganism, occult, etc when you get back to its origins. :) Actually the Rider Waite deck has *a lot* of Catholic symbolism, which makes it far more Christian in nature than Pagan.

I just wanted to poke in and say this whole little comment thread is an excellent overall comment thread starter. Thank you.

I didn't know that's what "occult" meant. I've only heard it used synonymously with "dark evil magic" even though I've heard "pagan" and "wicca" as both good and bad (and usually only "bad" by people with an obviously conservative and religious motivation, also referring to them as dark magic). Part of the problem might be that it has the word "cult" in it?

The word occult comes from the Latin word occultus (clandestine, hidden, secret), referring to "knowledge of the hidden"

For most practicing occultists it is simply the study of a deeper spiritual reality that extends beyond pure reason and the physical sciences.

The terms esoteric and arcane can have a very similar meaning, and the three terms are often interchangeable.

There are *many* reasons the term occult started being used synonymously with evil. Some of it malicious propaganda against the pagan based faiths when the Christian Church became more aggressive and were no longer the ones being persecuted. Ignorance of what the pagan rituals were actually trying to accomplish. Connection that "secret knowledge" was OBVIOUSLY evil or bad because it was secret and therefor the work of the devil. (Love the Batman leap of logic there)

Essentially, the issues between Paganism and Christianity (in particular although other faiths are guilty of nasty propaganda) comes from an agenda (Buckland has a great history of the tentative relationship between Pagans and Christians... and well we Pagans were just as guilty of bad PR against us when Christians were being killed for practicing THEIR religion. Just bare in mind not *all* forms of Paganism are the same, and the ones killing Christians were generally a more violent people to begin with their religious and spiritual views completely aside), a break down in communication and violence against our fellow man. Aka a big giant misunderstanding that resulted in persecution and a lot of negativity that we STILL cannot shake to this day.

The occult is not a religion; it includes religious traditions such as Kabbalah (jewish) and Christian ceremonial magic in addition to Wicca, paganism, etc.
