This comment is way too nice to be a part of the wank that's coming.

FAVORITE RELIGIOUS SONGS AND GO!

[identity profile] hunter-san.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
As the Deer Pants for the Water (edit; and I find the lyrics creepy when I pay attention to the words, but I loved the tune and lyrics because of the stalker-vibe. Kind of like that "i'm watching you" song that's awesome and creepy at the same time)

and something that had generic lyrics of:
"you came from heaven to earth helpless babe....something something" - old hymn style. Actually there are quite a few old hymns I enjoyed but I can't bring anything more than the tune to mind. Shame, I'd like to have the full lyrics. But unfortunately no-one I know from that church can bring the song to mind.

Is it Lord I Lift Your Name on High? Or From Heaven You Came Helpless Babe?

For the second one, full lyrics on second page of this: http://www.oursaviourlutheranchurch.ca/pdf/Sun120304.pdf

Yes the second one is it! Although I knew it as "The Servant King" now that my mind has been reminded. Thanks a load :D It's the first verse I like the most. Being sung by a traditional choir, it was so pretty :D

My all time favorite is You Raise Me Up buy Josh Groban. I'm not religious, but it gives me the sniffles.

[identity profile] amethyst-rei.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Just jumping in to say OMG, YES.

Also: Don't Give Up (You Are Loved).

They both brings tears right to my eyes, and I'm really not the type who cries over music. I ♥ Josh Groban.

I totally never realized that song was about God, ahaha. I thought it was supposed to be about a parent or romantic or sth.

[identity profile] leikomgwtfbbq.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Any of the religiously-related songs Johnny Cash did! They're all fantastic. Some of them were dark or gloomy, but they were still amazing tunes. What I really like about them is that I interpret even these gloomy-as-hell Revelation-type songs as having a dark kind of hope, and I find this contrast fascinating.

(Of course, I always interpreted Revelation as having less of a "you sinners suck and are so fucked, hope you all burn *smug smug*" tone and more a metaphorical reassurance of "There's a lot of shit that's gonna happen, and it's gonna be bad, but one day, there will be justice and mercy and happiness for everyone everywhere. Sit tight, keep calm, and carry on, hope springs eternal, etc." Is that weird? It probably is, but I like that interpretation, so I'm sticking with it.)

Also, Man in Black is one of my favorite songs ever.

I always liked Here I Am, Lord. I'm not even sure why it's my favorite; it's just...pretty. And the way it tells a story in the kind-of dialogue is nice.

Yay, a religious music rec thread! I love contemporary Christian music.

Everything by Skillet is great, though Whispers in the Dark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6PFAnOYZ-M) will always be my favorite.

Every Little Prison (Deliver Me) by Matt Maher (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mTUljC7ajU) (who is ~amazing~ in concert, by the way)

Castaway by Chasen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6yjOCbWDDw)

Forget and not Slow Down by Reliant K (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTlw_ZV2fIU)

Fight Another Day by Addison Road (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvT74QsGwOU). I've been listening to this a lot lately because it's a fun, upbeat song.

Orphans of God by Avalon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YE8ks34BxY8). Actually, I like everything by Avalon, though I admit that my nostalgia goggles are probably on too tight because I grew up with their music.

When She Cries by Britt Nicole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4tusxJ_Nqk)

East to West by Casting Crowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6zdihmwy1M)

A Better Way by Downhere (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NegD8s3pUpw)

He Will Carry Me by Mark Schultz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSXs6f2LMvk). Actually, everything by Mark Schultz is good. I love his voice.

Again by Needtobreathe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypHchfJo740)

Invisible by Disciple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpRUEsZoTyI). This song helped me get through a really tough time in life. <3

Note: all of these are by Christian artists, though a few of the songs themselves may be secular. I have dozens more, but this comment is getting kind of long, so I will stop.

"Everything by Skillet"

YES.

[identity profile] saiika-von-maou.livejournal.com 2012-04-27 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Always loved Skillet, but thanks for the rest! I adore having new music.

[identity profile] tari-silmarwen.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh oooh! Let me contribute too!

There Will Be A Day by Jeremy Camp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8gkDiTvloc)

Slow Fade by Casting Crowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QASREBVDsLk&ob=av2e)

Voice of Truth by Casting Crowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcuiuIwtpa4)

Glorious Day by Casting Crowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXp6xcY5IqU)

Until the Whole World Hears by Casting Crowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7qi2KlUffs&ob=av2n) (Lol, as you can see, I like Casting Crowns a lot.)

More Beautiful You by Jonny Diaz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNqQUojBg84&ob=av2n)

Million Voices by BarlowGirl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXVlb3hZQTg)

Never Alone by BarlowGirl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8QubLxJI54&ob=av2e)

Pretty much anything by Superchic[k] but I especially love Hero (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNlZz3RQxos) and Stand in the Rain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZjRMa7Pmj4).

Children of God by Third Day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6jO7xhU_Pw)

Stand and Scream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Ar-dSanQrI) and My Freedom (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZX9ucSw0SM) by Krystal Meyers

Everything by Michelle Tumes (she's got an Enya sound to her music for the most part). Caelum Infinitum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1M50_Ua3uk) is my favorite. (Arwen fanvid.)

Lion by Rebecca St. James (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3THSgdtw3U) (Written for the first Narnia movie.)

Alone by Sanctus Reel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcyRCOA8fWY)

Aaaand I should probably stop there, having fully demonstrated my level of geekery for this particular genre of music.

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-04-28 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I know about half of these. (Voice of Truth and Never Alone are both awesome, by the way.) I'm off to listen to the rest even though, honestly, I've downloaded way too much music already this month. I shouldn't be tempting myself with more.

I'm so glad that someone else understands my geekery when it comes to contemporary Christian music. When making my rec list, I had to force myself to skip 90% of the songs I wanted to rec, and stop looking for songs after I hit the "G" names on the artists, or else my list would have been a hundred songs long.

[identity profile] tari-silmarwen.livejournal.com 2012-04-29 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, yeah. I was tempted to link everything I liked too.

Old school: O Magnum Mysterium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fR4eYQMN6s8), as sung by the Robert Shaw Chorale. Sung alto 2 for that one in school and DAMN.

I'm agnostic, but ngl, if I ever heard this sung at the York Minster or something I think I'd bawl like a tiny baby.
