It only felt slow for me when Sam/Frodo/Smeagol wasn't there. When I was 11, I swear I skipped almost all of book 3 and 5 because I wanted them to shut the heck up about all the side characters.

Exact reverse for me, I skipped over the Sam/Frodo stuff almost entirely. I just found the rest of the Fellowship more interesting, they did more interesting things.

I've been in both positions. Back when I first read the books as a kid, I could only really concentrate on the Sam/Frodo stuff. After the movies, when I decided to go back and read the parts I never really read, I couldn't stand to slog through the Sam/Frodo parts and found the Merry/Pippin-Helm's Deep-Minas Tirith parts far more fascinating.

Oh man, I could have written this (and I was eleven when I first read it too). It took me TEN YEARS to properly appreciate 3 and 5. I think during one of my early read-throughs I skipped straight from Frodo and Sam reuniting with the Fellowship to Scouring of the Shire.
