I think what I loved about the Silmarillion is the mythology aspect of the whole thing. I really, really love creation myths and legends in general, so in that particular case Tolkien's slow style of writing didn't bother me at all. There were so many details, and it was just amazing. With the Trilogy, I felt like the style made me unable to keep my focus on the story, which is probably why I got more into it after watching the movies.

I was so disappointed when I let one of my friends borrow my copy of the book and after many months she brought it back to me, saying she hadn't been able to finish it and had just given up! :p
