I totally agree. I love LotR but I totally get it when people tell me that they tried to read the books and got bogged down. I feel like there's too MUCH detail, sometimes. Like every time they walk into a forest, godDAMN.

This is exactly what I find so difficult. There's a certain level of detail I can imagine accurately and after that I am making shit up. I don't need to know all the smells and the shape of the leaves and the feel of the wind because I will inevitably not imagine it exactly as written anyway. I'm satisfied with getting the gist of it.
