Okay, so, the way I understand it, Tolkien wrote The Hobbit for his own children. It caught someone’s attention and then became really popular. They wanted a sequel and since he had all of this backstory that he built up, he wrote The Lord of the Rings. Given that and his background (his focus on linguistics, working for the Oxford English Dictionary, training to be a codebreaker), it seems almost inevitable that the series would include a lot of exposition, an almost obsessive amount of detail, and some fairly dense language, which just isn’t conducive to an easy read.

Yeha, basically. Additionally, he's said that the story basically grew with his children. The Hobbit was written when they were kids. Lord of the Rings was for them as well, but they were adults now, and so the plot was correspondingly heavier and the prose heavier.
