It's a pack of cards with very specific imagery and very specific ways of reading them. What it does (paranormal aside) is make you think more critically and look at things in ways and angles you wouldn't necessary without the prompting from the symbolism.
Yes, you can say you might as well talk to yourself in a corner. Go for it, no one is stopping you... however there is no harm in using tools that help you to think more objectively.
