I personally love detailed description and consider Lord of the Rings to be my absolute favourite book ever, but oh my god, it's HARD to get through sometimes. The first time I read the Hobbit at age ten, it took me a day. I read Lord of the Rings a few months later and it took me two months, and that was with skipping bits (a lot of the politics went straight over my head).
So yeah - it can be hard to slough through. Some people have a mindset that fits well with it (I think I do - I love a lot of detail and how the prose can be almost poetic and just... going into everything), but it's not exactly punchy, and the pacing can leave much to be desired at time.
Like. I would have preferred to get Shelob's backstory when she wasn't currently chasing after the Hobbits XD;;
