I think the reason why The Hobbit feels like it was aimed at young children is because it was. It was a children's novel, while LotR stepped up in age range significantly.

I will however say that The Hobbit is still a fair sight better reading than the Narnia chronicles, which upon rereading as an adult (after the movies started coming out) felt condescending in how child-oriented they were. (Note: I love Narnia, I had LWW, MN and LB read in class when I was in second grade. I read most of the rest of the books later in my childhood too.)
