Slow and ponderous as fuck.
I found it a lot easier to read The Silmarillion (a lot of that is due to how much it read like the Bible, and how fond I was of the stories (Adam and Eve, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses and the Children of Israel escaping Egypt and the various events on the trip to the Promised Land) in Genesis), and later when I finally knuckled down and did so, The Hobbit was not bad reading either, but it was the children's story of the whole series.
Later, after the movies, I went back and read the Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith parts, and couldn't reread Frodo and Sam's journey for love nor money. Slow and bleeding fuck.
My mother has never read the books. She tried once, when her brother recommended The Hobbit to her, but she never finished the first chapter, let alone even tried LotR proper. She loves the movies because frankly, their pacing makes it easier to absorb the story - which is also one of the reasons why it wasn't until after the movies I could read the parts I missed.
The books are not for everyone.
