There are plenty of female characters who are silly and slapstick and childish like the men you describe, the female version of the stupid frat-boy male. You just complain that they're bimbos and say they don't count.

This. I Love Lucy, anyone? The silly woman-serious man trope is older than the serious woman-silly man trope. But she's ~a dumb blonde so she doesn't count, does she?

~a dumb blonde

Lucille Ball is a redhead. A notorious redhead. Infamously ginger.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

I meant the trope, not her literal hair color. My point still stands.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, Lucille Ball was a natural blonde, but used henna to dye her hair red.

Still famous for being ginger of course, but where the hell else am I supposed to make use of that information? ;)

And heavily inspired by I Love Lucy, there's Fran Fine in The Nanny, opposed to the serious, formal, highly educated and uptight Maxwell Sheffield (although he could be pretty emotionally immature, but so could the entire rest of the cast).

Peggy Bundy in Married with Children. I loved that character.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-29 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
To be fair, Al wasn't the straight man half the time and acted childish as often as Peggy. I mean, yeah, he had a job but he wasn't particularly the responsible type either.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, they ARE bimbos and they DON'T count. Are you really going to pretend that portrayals of dumb women aren't misogynist when viewed in the context of a misogynist culture?

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Pray tell, how do we portray stupid female characters not in the context of a misogynist culture, if the culture is misogynist? Fantasy?

There are plenty of female characters with more guts than brains in fantasy novels but either OP hasn't found them or dismissed them as idiots, then.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't we just throw them in with the men and make them dudebros?
Because that would be awesome.

(Anonymous) 2012-04-28 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
You could but as soon as you did, you'd get people complaining she isn't smart enough. That's reality. You could make one a dudebro and another smart and then you'd get women picking one side or the other and saying one is better and the other sucks, and that's reality too.

Oh yay, I get to break out my Office Monologue!

This is why I love couples like Pam and Jim from The Office. They're genuinely friends with each other and laugh together and play pranks, have their individual wins and failures, and are completely equal. You could switch their sexes to make them Paul and Jane or make them Pam and Jane or Paul and Jim and it wouldn't change their dynamics at all. There is no "dumb one" or "naggy one" or "one calling the shots". It's all equal, fun, friendly, and fair. That's the way to peace right there.

Great monologue because I've always been fond of their relationship. They're one of the fictional relationships that really feel like they could work.

Uh, I thought a "bimbo" was a stupid, shallow, oversexualized character, not a silly, slapstick, childish one.
