I think that there's a lot of programming involved. We all have preferences, but since gamers as a whole are mostly cool with either, I think it makes sense for the dev team to choose the view that suits their design better and stick to it. It's not just the character model, the levels themselves may be designed to better fit a certain camera for a variety of reasons.
Of course for some projects, the best view is 'both' and both are implemented, but it sounds like it's a lot of effort and the time and money to be invested in a project are limited.

That said, if you have issues controlling your character in 3rd person view, dismissing them entirely is not exactly mature of your friends. =/ Again, I don't think it's likely to happen, but wishing for it surely makes lots of sense from your point of view! And more choices never hurt anyone.
