I liked and sympathized with Loki, mainly because I saw my worst traits in him. I don't think it was flimsy---bad cases of sibling rivalry can take their toll on people. Also, he was never told he was adopted before that, and since he seems pretty analytical and politically minded, it's easy to see how he would guess that he was merely a pawn, not genuinely loved. So he feels he has to earn that---the thing about supervillains is that they never go about things the right way and their actions are never truly justified, which is where they lose our sympathy. You have to admit that the scene where Loki goes to tell Thor that he's permanently banished is pure gold, though---possibly the best villain/hero confrontation I've seen in a comic book movie, and that includes The Dark Knight.
