Normally I'd consider it bad form to request time off for work for something that could easily be caught at another time (tape it, DVR it, catch it online, etc), but, really, if your dad wanted to watch it with you, then you were celebrating his birthday with him... just not in the traditional sense.

not really a double standard I think. Most people found this one cute because the father and daughter skipped work because watching the premier together clearly had great sentimental value for them and they bonded over it. Plus it actually was the weekend of her dad's birthday, so they didn't technically lie about that. That just wasn't the main reason they wanted off work.

The other person just sounds kind of sad. Maybe if they had skivved off work to watch it with their little brother or sister or something people wouldn't have mocked them.
