I think it was more about the fact that fandom named her "Derpy," which is basically slang for mental disability played for laughs. Where they made that leap, I don't know, but you find a lot of macros of people with odd facial expressions with variations of "derp" in the caption, so I think it was (in their minds) a (relatively) logical leap.

Because some of us remember "durr", "derp" and other variations of the word being thrown about as slurs at mentally disabled children?

Not directed at you, but I'm tired of people saying "South Park made it up". No, they didn't. It was used against one of my friends when I was a kid-and that was 20 years ago.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It was used against me when I was a kid. I was told by bronies on F!S that since it wasn't personally made-up for me I shouldn't take offense.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, unfortunately, you can't prove that. So...South Park made it up. It's in general used as a noise for someone doing something stupidly. I have seen it used in the context of abled and disabled people alike.

And "durr" is a different...expression...than "derp" or "herp derp". The former I've heard for years. The later is an internet thing.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-02 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Whether one evolved from the other or no, they are related. Just check out the google image search for Derp and it brings up macros covered in 'hurr durr derp'.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Believe me, I remember.

[identity profile] syri-moon.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I never got this point. I guess it has to do more with where you are/what corners of the internet you lurk on, because until all this hubub, I'd only ever heard "derp" as a synonym for a fuck-up. As in, Yeah, I derped at work today, and dropped a while tray of glasses. I've never heard it used as a slurr for the mentally disabled. I suppose there I can see where perhaps it was derived from that point, but even then, it seems to me (and this is personal experience) that it's far removed from it's original meaning.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2012-05-02 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because you think it's divorced from its original meaning doesn't make it so. Many people consider it offensive (including myself). Please be mindful of where words and that words mean things and stop using offensive language.

[identity profile] syri-moon.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
No. I don't have any reason to monitor my language when there is nothing wrong with it, just because someone, somewhere, might get fucking butthurt over it. Jesus fucking Christ I swear to God Livejournal just wants to become as close to 1984 a it possibly can

Cue your response that I'm immature, inconsiderate, below you, sad, uneducated, pitiful, etc.

[identity profile] wrestlingdog.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I do think it's inconsiderate and a huuuuuuge overreaction to compare this in any way to 1984. Asking you to not be an asshole is not censorship. It just means that you should think about the way your words affect others.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-04 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
She is over blowing it, but it's a bit much to tell her to stop using a word when it isn't as clear cut a slur like 'fag' or what have you. But it does have enough of a reputation as playground and internet slang to where it isn't appropriate on a kid's show.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-04 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
Over reacting, 'I'm not offended so it's not offensive!', meet that person who gives SJWs their reputation. The Derpy debate in a nutshell!

(Anonymous) 2012-05-04 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I find this particular "sjw" to be rather considerate and reasonable.
