If you have a problem falling for fandom friends...try meeting people outside of fandom, and then the comparison won't be made. But seriously, want do you expect? That people in fandom are there for fandom shouldn't be a surprise.

Honestly I think that hooking up with someone you meet through fandom is just asking for what you're talking about to happen. I won't say "in this fandom, especially," but the fact is, I've seen it over and over and over again in my circle of fandom friends.

It seems the problem is not that your exes were into fandoms, but that they were jerks who had unrealistic expectation of what a real person looks like and failed to make you feel special (that, or you are quite insecure, OP, and you feel like you'll never measure up to the pretty people in fandom - in that case realize that most of us aren't models, but that doesn't mean we can't manage to find people who treat us respectfully).

I hate to break out the clichés, OP but maybe you just haven't met the right kind of person for you yet. My husband and I are both in fandom (with minimal crossover but still...) and stuff like what you're describing is our little inside joke. We make jokes about our fictional "I'd tap that/hall pass" lists. We get that it's fantasy and that saying "Character X is really attractive/sexy/WOOOHOO HOT!" doesn't change the fact that we're together, we love each other and we're happy.

And yes, there are people who don't get it's a fantasy and do take it too far, but just because you met someone through fandom doesn't mean they're automatically that extreme.
