ayrt.

30DD. But I'm 5'11'' and I have nice hips, so it balances it out. I'm not super skinny, but I'm not chubby either. And I don't mean to sound conceited. I'm just confident in my body.

Friend I'm referring to is 48DD (I think!) but she's about 4'9'' and she's really skinny. She's really pretty, but the contrast between her breasts and the rest of her is too extreme. Not to mention she gets the worst backpain... ah, I'm rambling.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
DD isn't that large, especially with a size 30. That's only a 35 inch bust, which is going to look pretty small, since it's smaller than the average bust size on a size chart. You're kind of making your size sound larger than it really looks. I'm sure people walking by don't even notice.

The reason why your friend seems huge isn't the cup size but rather her ribcage. 48 is a huge ribcage, so you either don't know much about larger chest sizes or she's overweight. Some of my friends are 200 lbs and they weren't even a size 48 under their breasts.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
DA

Seriously? You don't think DD is considered large? That's just wacky.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
It all depends on the ribcage size and the cup size in what would make people perceive you as larger. A 34DD would be around a 39" bust size, would would look large. A 30G would be around a 37" bust size, which is a larger size as well. It's also relative to sister cup sizes, which are around the same size in perception that you can switch bras if you're desperate (they won't fit perfectly, but they'll do). A sister cup size to a 30DD is a 32D and a 34C. A 34C is smaller than the average bra size in the US. The 34 bandwidth is the average ribcage size though. So if you want a comparison of how you look, go by that.

*shrugs* A 30DD is just not going to look that big.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I am 34B, if I had DD cup size they would be ginormous. My friend is a 30DD and her breasts are noticeable large (she's also 5'5). I just...you're logic does not match my life experiences.

Where are you getting your averages from? Because your numbers there are also not what my experience tells me.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
I know people who are B cups or even J cups, with all kinds of ribcage sizes. I learned about proper bra fittings at an early age and about sister cups. And I'm telling you, I've seen a 30DD and it's not that big. A lot of my friends thought she was a lot smaller than that cup size.

See, that's just bizarre. I got measured at this super swanky bra shop that Oprah talked about and I was measured as a 28F, but I've been wearing 34DD. There IS a noticeable difference between my 28F bra and my 34DD bra, mainly that while I fit in the 34DD cups, there's still that jiggle-jelly boob thing going on, and then the band just sort of sucks because it's all up near my armpits cause I can't fit it on the low point where you're supposed to? I dunno, I don't understand the whole sister cups thing, but it helps out a hella lot because it'll be a cold, rainy day in hell that I drop another 85$ on a goddamned bra that's my actual size. :|

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 05:28 am (UTC)(link)
Not sure if this is what you're unsure of re: sister cups, but if it helps to think of it this way (and this is my understanding only, so people feel free to correct me!): the cups on a bra are really meant to, well, cup around your whole breast for support. The band in between the underwires fits snug against your chest and the underwire along the sides fits a little forward of and pointing towards the armpits.

So with the 34DD bra, since the DD cups are smaller than your actual F, they won't cup all the way around. But the 34" band -- having extra slack from being larger than your actual 28" ribcage -- is able to take up the rest of the difference between your breasts and your ribcage. So it fits overall, but:

Cups not giving all the needed support and putting extra work on the non-load-bearing band = jiggle-jelly boob
Band too large to tension against ribcage = all up near armpits

In conclusion, I wish all bras over $30 came with puppies.

That's the same size as a 34C. It's decent-size, but when you're that tall, it's actually not very "big."

Yeeeeah, I'm going to be over here with my 30H boobs.

Regardless of the ribcage size the breasts are still big
DD is the cup size, the number is the ribcage size. Someone with a 52" ribcage with AA tits is still going to look flat-chested.

My mom is petite and like a 30D and trust me, they still look big

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
30DD IS large. It's not humongous, no, but I never said it was. If I have to shop for shirts a size bigger because I can't fit my breasts into stuff my size, then they're large. If I have to wear two sports bras while jogging because one doesn't cut it, then they're large. If I can't even cup my entire breast with one hand, then they're large.

And no, my friend isn't overweight. She has huge boobs. Yes, her upper body is a bit wide, but she's certainly not fat. Or even chubby. She's small. It is possible for skinny people to just have big breasts, you know.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you know much about larger chest sizes then, if you say your friend isn't overweight. She's most likely a H cup, or even larger. I have a small rib cage and larger breasts, and I can tell you that a 30DD isn't that big in comparison.

Your sister cup sizes are a 32D and a 34C, your bust size is 35". *shrugs* It's just not going to look that big, especially if you're that tall.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's also possible for skinny people to have large rib cages and. Numbers really don't tell the whole story.

As far as the letter size goes though, doesn't that refer to the actual BREAST and isn't a D pretty much always a D no matter how big the person is or what ribcage size they are?

I'm pretty confused now.

This.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
If your friend is small and not fat, she is likely not a 40-anything. She probably should go in for a fitting.

[identity profile] lashiec.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
This. If you're 40+ and not fat, I've GOT to see it because it's seriously unheard of. They must be really, really disproportionate.

"Some of my friends are 200 lbs and they weren't even a size 48 under their breasts."

Yeah, I mean... I have a pretty stout ribcage, plus I'm fat, and I'm about a 40B. If the OC's friend is a 48 and thin, she has probably been missized (which is really, really common... there are some amount of statistics that the majority of women are wearing cup sizes that are too small for them).

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. My friend is 5'2" and 240 pounds and her bra size is 48 DD as well. 48 refers to the size of your waist, not the size of your actual breasts.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
48 refers to ribcage measurement, not waist.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I suspect your friend isn't actually wearing a properly fitting bra, then. If she's really skinny but wearing a huge band size, it's probably because she's using that old (and incorrect) idea that you can go down a cup size and up a band size and it's the same thing. I used to wear a 46DD because it was the closest thing to a proper fit I could find at most stores. Then I went to a specialty bra store and got properly fitted by a professional. I'm a 36L. I highly recommend you suggest to your friend that she does the same. Getting the right sized bra makes all the difference in the world on looking and feeling good in most clothing.

[identity profile] relmneiko.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
The selection in low-end or middle-end stores makes me want to cry, honestly. Some stores don't even go above a C or D. It's like... have you SEEN the women who live around here?? Stock some DDs and Es at least!!

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
48 is waist size. If she had a 48 DD, she would be extremely overweight.

[identity profile] urplesquirrel.livejournal.com 2012-05-03 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
No 48 is the size of the rib cage directly below the breasts. It varies from woman to woman, but it's usually a good 8 inches above the waist.

[identity profile] fuchsiascreams.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 08:37 am (UTC)(link)
Either way, if you're a 48, then you certainly aren't any kind of thin. My friend used to wear a 48 DD and she was 5'2" and 240 pounds.
