(Anonymous) 2012-05-03 02:29 am (UTC)(link)Actually, Romeo and Juliet being together is a) entirely reasonable in the context of it being set in the late 16th century, especially since it's explicitly stated that Juliet would not be the youngest girl ever married (and that there are mothers her age to boot) when Paris is asking Lord Capulet for Juliet's hand; and b) 16 and 13 isn't that big an age gap even in the 21st century, though the 13 part would likely be squicky to a random 21st century person in a first-world country just because "too young to get married and have sex", which I entirely agree with. On the other hand, I'm pretty sure they never managed to consummate the marriage, what with Romeo being banished a couple hours after they got married and all...
[I just finished reading the damn thing and I have a chip on my shoulder about remembering that different times have different moralities and so things do need to be looked at through that lens as well as asking if it would be morally wrong in the morality contemporary with the viewer, don't mind me.]
