You know, I spent a few weeks at a resort in a country with a pretty entrenched class system and disproportionate wealth once. If you were lounging by the pool, reading a book or something, one of the staff would come up to you and do that not-actually-a-bow thing where they clasp their hands in front of them and sorta hunch and duck constantly as they talk to you, asking if there's anything you want them to do. Skeeved me the fuck out. There was just something so very... groveling about it, it was really unnerving.

I think really, the idea that I owned a human life would be so beyond creepy that I wouldn't be able to enjoy never having to do my own laundry again. I think that most people raised in a reasonable egalitarian culture would agree, if they experienced something like a truly servile attitude.

Oh, and just a History P.S. An actual letter from an ex-slave to his owner post-civil war. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/01/in-recently-discovered-le_n_1247288.html)

This. I can't imagine having people bow to me and do basic stuff for me that I can do for myself, I'd feel so icky about it. Not trying to sound like I think I'm morally superior or something, because it's probably largely the way I was raised and who knows what kind of sick monster I'd be if I was raised having slaves... but yeah, the whole thought of that just weirds me out.
