I can't help but think back to Rebecca Black and how so many people (people, who if asked would probably say they're totally against bullying) were so quick to jump on the hate bandwangon for her heinous crime of having a little fun and singing a silly song (so to that one anon further up, yes, people can be totally vicious about petty things).

The bullying did spill over into real-life and I think that it wouldn't have been so bad (probably just a bit of teasing) if it hadn't been for the internet giving the impression that hating on the poor girl was acceptable.

Okay, so one person saying one mean thing maybe is not a big deal. But if it's the wrong person at the wrong time it can so easily lead to dogpiling which can then so easily lead to bullying and often times for something as minor as a badly-phrased comment that somebody misunderstood. It has happened many times on this very community.

(Eh, sorry for the long comment.)

I know nothing of this person. Details?

That girl that sang "Friday". The bullying definitely got out of hand.

But that was different than being in fandom and then getting picked on. This was her actual name, her real life, and everything. She wasn't some anon online talking about ships.

I honestly have no idea what that song is. I guess it's somehow offensive?

DA

Not really offensive, just pretty stupid. I don't think it has enough substance to be offensive to be anything other than music sensibilities.

I don't like the idea that's underlying this post of "She must have deserved it."

It's an incredibly inoffensive song. Lyrics are "It's Friday, it's Friday, gotta get down on Friday" and walks through a typical morning - rising, eating cereal, going to the bus stop, seeing her friends in a car, deciding whether to sit in the front or the back seat, and going to school. Part of what people complain about with the song is that it is vapid and bland - to which, so what? Lots of songs have catchy beats (like Friday) and boring lyrics. But Rebecca Black's song was an earworm. People vented angrily about it, getting really vicious and hating on the artist, calling her horrible names and saying awful things about her talent or lack thereof. But what did she do to hurt them? Nothing. She just wrote a catchy song that went viral. She never claimed it was the best thing ever, but she was treated horribly over it.
