[Leviathan]

DO. IT.

Either the fanfic or the book. idgaf. I would read it.

(Also, I LOVE Leviathan so much <3)

I have no idea what Leviathan is, but I totally second this. I would read either!

Write the YA novel! While I'm slowly finding more and more YA novels with gay protagonists, there still need to be more. And a trans* protagonist would be even more welcome :)

Love Leviathan. Don't really see it how you do though.

I'd read a book about a gay couple of trans character. Even in the adult section, there aren't that many.

I thought about the possibility of Deryn being trans, but with that in mind, I didn't read her as liking being a man for its own sake. She "became" a man because it was the only way she'd get to keep flying and because she hated the life she'd be required to lead if she stayed at home. I felt as though she thought of it as the means to an end, but not something she would have done if women had been allowed to join the military. (I'm a cis female, so I might be projecting too.)

BUT I think it would be awesome if you wrote that book. I'd read it!

OP

I think it was because of the way Dylan reacts to other people thinking he's not a man. In Leviathan, Dylan curses being born a girl. In Goliath, Alek sees that Dylan is trying to start a physical fight with him to feel more like a man. When Lilit asks him if he'd want to be a man forever, Dylan says that it doesn't seem possible anymore- dodging the question. Instead, he kind of mutters that maybe he could live as a girl in a freer society, which I always read as an option that he'd take if he had no other choice. He won't even tell Lilit his birth name.

It's just little things like this that makes me think Dylan is an FTM, but I've heard others give convincing arguments that they see Deryn as genderqueer. Of course, that's one of the incredibly appealing factors of the character- whether you're cis female or FAAB trans*, Deryn/Dylan mirrors your identity as you read. That's just barking cool.

Please do either, OP! That sounds like an absolutely fascinating idea.

Bad: Writing a fanfic, then search+replacing all names and places so it's "original"
Good: Coming up with an idea for a fanfic, then deciding you want to write an original story instead with that idea

The idea is yours. As long as the characters are reasonably enough your own, I don't see anything skeevy and fifty-shades-of-grey about this.

[identity profile] harpsi-fizz.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Publish it.

For the FTM boys of future generation.

For the FTM boys of now who are just getting the courage to come out.

For the FTM men who had to grow up without this.

For the FTMs before that even who struggled so hard just so that we can be here today.

Do it. I'll buy a copy if I know about it.

Aw man, someone else read the Leviathan series!

I agree with you about Dylan, but I think there will always be people who will argue about it because it's very difficult to write about a gay trans person in an era and culture where people simply didn't accept the existence of trans people and regarded "homosexuality" as a sinful, criminal way of life. People will argue that Dylan never self-identifies as either, but there wasn't any way to do that in the WWI era. :/ It's a real catch-22: be with Alek and allow yourself to be treated as female and defined by others as female, or be...whatever it even is, Dylan and Alek might not even know that it's possible for them to have a relationship although Alek may well have read the Greek classics.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
OP

Considering how many social mores Alek and Dylan have been defying over the series, I don't think it's totally out of the question that they'd break a few more to be happy. :) And yes, I totally believe Alek has read Plato, given his comfort with Latin.

And I don't think it'd be too unlikely that they'd crash into the gay underbelly of London in the '20s and '30s.

There were even a few FTM surgeries back then! (MTF cases are far more common and more likely to be documented, in the case of Lili Elbe, but if you look hard you can find a few.) Transsexuality and gender variance seem to have been confused with sexual orientation in words like the oh-so-posh 'invert', and drag balls were a common thing in the gay community. In one of my favorite books 'Queer London', about gay life in London between the wars and up until the Wolfenden Report, there's a photo of hundreds of men in costume and in drag, filling an entire dance hall. You can even pick out a few committed couples. Deryn and Alek might have been readily accepted into such a community, or at least have a passing awareness of that community's existence.

I so want to read this now, just saying.

(Either one. But I'm gonna also say, there are plenty of people out there that would love to see more trans representation in published fiction.)

I WOULD READ THAT FIC SO HARD
if you made it into a book of its own, I'd read the hell out of that too!
