Oh hi Jeff Foxworthy.

Seriously though this argument is old as fucking dirt. It's fine if you prefer one over the other but to say one of the two is inherently superior is just dumb. Cartoons for example may have been better in say the 90's but we've gotten plenty of unnecessary fanservice-ridden pieces of shit anime since then too.

*agree*

Yeah I'm sick of this weird worship of Eastern writers, as if they're somehow magically better because they're foreign, and it really is an ancient cliche, even if this particular version of it is a bit more modern.
"They're just more deep" - bullshit. Putting all Asian or all Japanese works on a pedestal is not really less racist than saying all Japanese or Asian works are inferior. Japanese authors, like American authors, are sometimes good and sometimes bad, sometimes skillfull and sometimes sloppy. Now one may prefer the tropes and mythologies of one or another culture and prefer the works that come out of those cultures in the tradition of those mythologies, but saying they're inherently superior is just ridiculous.

I think it's because we never see the 90% of stuff that will bomb from Asian writers; we see all the garbage from American writers.

[identity profile] megalomaniageek.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Very true. People who rely exclusively on legal media will only see the foreign stuff that somebody thought was good enough to buy the rights to, often after seeing what bombed and what did well. Not that they don't license and adapt horrible stuff, but any kind of filtration system will impact the perception of the shit:average:gold ratio. Even folks who pirate whatever gets scanlated/fansubbed will benefit from the disinterest on the Japanese side in utter garbage.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-04 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, especially because it seems like someone has to recommend it or care about it enough to translate it.

[identity profile] writerserenyty.livejournal.com 2012-05-04 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Even then, the stuff that tends to be remembered is the better stuff. There was probably just as much crap anime in the 90s as there is now, it is just either forgotten or was never brought over to the US, whereas now with the internet people can see EVERYTHING that's aired in Japan easily.
