I'm not afraid to admit that it's no better or worse, or any more special than any other type of media out there. If that makes me 'not a fan', then I guess I'm not. Still doesn't stop me from enjoying a show if I happen to like it.

If anime is a genre, then cartoons, books, and movies are genres.

IT'S ANIMATION. You can't really lump a sci-fi series in with a historical drama and call it the same thing just because it came from Japan.

Okay, I was trying to refer to the specific style of animation. Maybe I'm just tired or whatever, the only word I could think of at the time was 'genre' so I just went with that.

French comics and animation have a specific style and look to them too. (And coincidentally, they also call animation "animé"). Same for American animation, etc. You can usually tell the country of origin of animation by looking at it.

Every time I see you posting with your old school space opera anime icons I squee a little inside.

I really really wanted to like that show, it had everything going for it (lots of big names that I like working on it) but in the end it was just... disappointing. I blame it on the shitty budget and short episode run.

My secret is that I haven't watched LoGH yet, I was hoping the English release of Tytania would be testing the waters for a license.

Oh nobody will ever license LoGH. Anime is a niche market in the United States to begin with (though to be honest I could see sci-fi fans going for it too, but that's also a niche market) and trying to make money off of an old anime that's not Miyazaki-directed is an even bigger gamble. Even if you released each season as a $40 boxset like Right Stuf and others are doing now, the whole series would still run you close to $200, more if it was on Blu-ray (though I don't get the point of putting old animation on Blu-ray, people do it anyway). Besides, the Central Anime subs are pretty good and you can torrent it easily.

Ocean did a dub of a few episodes for some reason, so there's rumors that a R1 release of it was planned at some point in time but... it would cost a fortune to dub this anime, too many characters, what were they thinking (though Michael Kopsa as Schenkopp is just... oh my god /fans self):

There's not really any plot spoilers in the video btw. Too bad they couldn't dub the whole series because I like the way they reworded the dialogue so it seems less stilted (CA's subs are pretty good but they're also a bit too literally translated). Michael Kopsa (Char's English VA) is about 2:05 into the video, enjoy the out of context homoerotic dialogue there

It took me about a year to finish LoGH, and it's not exactly the kind of anime you can marathon, but once you get to the end of S1 (about 25 or so episodes in) you'll be hooked.
