Different strokes for different folks. I enjoy my fair share of both Eastern and Western material and there's good shit and bad shit on both sides. On that note I do find that Eastern media, when it comes to cartoons anyway, do tend to tackle more controversial subject matter than Western does, which can lead to a much more interesting storyline since it deals with more adult subject matter like rape, death, mental illness, and the like. Some Western material does take this on (like Hunger Games) but if its aimed towards a younger audience that controversial material seems to be typically avoided in order to not cause a stir and get kids' parents panties in a bunch. I think that's a big factor that needs to be considered. Anime can be aimed more at adults while the other material (outside of LOTR) is aimed at YOUNG adults.

On that note I wish you had chosen some better anime like say, "Now and Then, Here and There" or Evangelion. Even Fullmetal Alchemist tackles some pretty interesting subject matter involving death and the willingness of sacrifice for loved ones.
