I'm curious - is it only bad when white people place people of other races? Is it cool if, say, John Cho plays a Japanese [or whatever] dude, because all Asians are the same?

Actually, I'm not terribly thrilled about John Cho playing Sulu.
Though in fairness: The guy play McCoy, an American, is from New Zealand. Are all White people the same?

The bottom line is, this is actors playing made up characters, and Khan is arguably not even 'Indian' in a cultural sense, so I'm just getting a little fed up with all this wank over something that probably isn't even going to happen

... what does that even mean? That because we're not pounded over the head with how Indian Khan is, he might as well be white?

Look, I don't know if the rumor is true or not. I'm staying in denial because I don't like to think that Abrams would do that. But if it is, then yeah, it sucks and the above doesn't change that. Not whitewashing a character doesn't only matter when the character is the Indianest Indian to have ever Indianed.

Very easy to say when POCs have a fucking hard time getting roles in Hollywood, especially East and South Asians and Asian-Americans. It doesn't matter how Indian Khan is, or Montalban played him (it was the 1960s, just because it was acceptable then, doesn't mean it is now), the point that Khan was obviously a POC and they are whitewashing him. I would like to see someone who is of India descent do it, like Sendil Ramamurthy who more popular than Cumberbatch in the States through Heroes.

It is a lot worse, yes. You can't put the two on the same level because white people usurping and taking over POC roles has a very bad history.

It's less of an issue with East Asians playing each other, although yeah, it still IS an issue because of the whole ~all look same~ stereotype. But as an East Asian, I'm a lot more inclined to give them slack because at least JJ Abrams and John Cho seem aware of and sensitive to the issues and implications, as they've talked about it before. And at least East Asians are in a way more similar to each other than, say, a Latino is to an Indian (referring to Ricardo Montalban playing Khan in the original).

If it's true that Benedict is playing Khan, I wonder how Abrams will spin this one...
