I think the difference between atrocities that we fail to stop/outright ignore in the present and the Hunger Games is that Panem goes out of its way to publicize its human rights atrocities. :| This is a future that still has television. Unless all the other nations of the world are poor enough to lack any of our present-day technology, let alone things developed by their own time, aren't there going to be people picking up clips of the Hunger Games on Youtube and going "holy shit, what is wrong with this picture?"

I'm wondering if perhaps the rest of the world is still recovering. Like they were hit hard enough that even now they're focussed on their own survival and don't have the time or rsources to worry about other countries they might not even know if the exist or not? What if the americas is the only that still has reliable TV? or it's only broadcast specifically in Panem? i.e. America is the 'first world' country and everyone else is stuck in 2nd or 3rd world and don't know how panem is? makes me wonder why Panem isn't "exploring" the other countries or rediscovering unless they are so bad off they can't bother to expend resources branching out or so focusserd on controlling the distrcts they can't afford to expand

tl;dr i have a lot questions about the rest of the world and why panem isnt branching out

Of course they are. Then someone is going to make a half-hour documentary about it halfway around the world, people will donate a lot money/resources, and in that country there will be a scandal of one sort or another while back in Panem, there may be some ripples but ultimately little will change.

/deadpan

In all seriousness, I'm saying there are a lot of situations in which I can buy that people see this shit and do nothing. I mean, look at the books' source/inspiration, the Roman gladiators and making slaves/prisoners of war fight to the death for the people's entertainment. Maybe some people hated it back then and thought it was atrocious, but even more people went to see it and cheer it on. Hell, slavery was widely practiced until less than two centuries ago, and in many areas socially accepted. Today, there is still rampant slavery, genocide, and in the middle of all that, child soldiers, all around the world right now.

Who knows where human society will be anywhere from a hundred to a thousand years from now?

tl;dr - don't underestimate humanity's capability to collectively be an asshole and go anywhere from not giving a fuck about someone else's horrific misery to cheering it on. D: Humans are a really mean species.

I don't think the Roman Empire is a good comparison, to be honest. The context is radically different. I don't think it's plausible for a nation like Panem to be able to get away with murdering children if the rest of the world still exists and doesn't have similar practices.

[identity profile] nyxelestia.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
The context is radically different.

My point exactly.

Humanitarianism and caring about people not "here" is actually a somewhat recent thing, and very specific to our context, one which likely is nonexistent in Panem.

I mean, there was a secret a few posts back about Katniss saying "how are we supposed to root for someone who tried to drown a kitten?" - today, you try to drown a kitten and you could get arrested. Go back a century or two and people were practically paid to do it because we didn't have time or resources for that amount of compassion.

We don't know the context, which is of course the entire point of the secret. I'm just saying I can see other countries being all right, not doing the same thing themselves, and still not interfering with Panem's practice of arbitrarily murdering children, namely because a.) shit like this has happened before and b.) while on very different scales, levels, and contexts, stuff like this even happens now.

As I mentioned before, humanity is not really a nice species. To be honest, my pessimistic mind actually does assume that probably the rest of the world is doing the same exact thing as Panem, or something similar.

[identity profile] lovelycudy.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 02:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed, context is everythig, something I often see ignored when people talk about history. It's just that, without any real information about what is happening in the world, it's hard to know what is this canon's context.

If people in other countries are picking up clips of the Hunger Games on Youtube, I think there's just as good a chance that the Games have a cult following there.
