I think it's difficult if you write a really unpopular pairing because it's hard to get a big response from random readers if not many fans like your pairing. Have you tried to cross post to some different comms? What about tryiing F F Net as well as LJ? That way you might get some new readers.

I'm sure your friends are being genuine. I know how you feel though, if you don't get feedback from outside your own group of friends it can be really easy to talk yourself down. Might also be worth keeping an eye on how many people read your stuff, if that number isn't dropping a lot, you might have a bit of a lurker following as well.
