If they're getting into in-depth discussions of the pairing with you, it's probably genuine.

This. A friend might give you a generic happy note, but only a real fan will geek out with you.

I think it's difficult if you write a really unpopular pairing because it's hard to get a big response from random readers if not many fans like your pairing. Have you tried to cross post to some different comms? What about tryiing F F Net as well as LJ? That way you might get some new readers.

I'm sure your friends are being genuine. I know how you feel though, if you don't get feedback from outside your own group of friends it can be really easy to talk yourself down. Might also be worth keeping an eye on how many people read your stuff, if that number isn't dropping a lot, you might have a bit of a lurker following as well.

I've liked unpopular pairings, and while it made me more likely to overlook faults in a good story, it didn't make me pretend to like utter crap. If your friends are doing more than leaving comments like "This was good, please continue" and actually talking to you, they're probably being genuine. I doubt you're perfect, but it seems like they are legitimately enjoying what you write.

If you're worried about your writing skills, you still shouldn't just quit. See if any of these people would be willing to beta for you. Look up writing advice and see what you need to work on. Do that thing where instead of posting it right away, you sit on it for a few days and then revise. I'm guessing you're not a terrible writer, but if you can channel your insecurity into a desire to improve, you'll end up even better.

nah bro, the comments are sincere. :)

Don't worry too much about this : my fandom friends hardly ever bothered to comment (or even read) my fics, unless they liked the pairing to begin with.

If they comment and interact about it, chances are they probably really enjoy it.
