I'll give you Jon and Ygritte, though. I'd completely forgotten about her, but she's one of the very few characters in the series who didn't really have an agenda of any kind.

The only real love stories in the series, imo, are Cat/Ned, Renly/Loras and Jaime/Cersei (although even that is borderline because Jaime seemed to only love this idealized version of Cersei he had in his head and when she breaks from that mold, he's kind of over it.)

It's kind of telling of how fucked up that world is that Jaime/Cersei is one of the happier romances. (I'm so upset about their break-up.) But it looks like there was a lot of idealisation going on on both sides still.
I'm not really seeing Jon/Ygritte, though I'm sure there's a certain amounts of genuine caring; but she basically blackmails him into sleeping with her, and he plans to betray her the whole time.
Renly/Loras, probably, but we never really find out if Renly was into Loras as much as Loras was into him...? (At least in book-verse, I haven't seen the show.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)I'm tying to think of other couples to add to your list and it's surprisingly difficult... So far all I can think of are I've got Oberyn Martell/Ellaria Sand, and Duncan Targaryen/Jenny of Oldstones( but they're before the scope of the books, so do they really count...?)
And then of course, depending on how much we want to go into rumors and fan theories, there may also be Rhaegar/Lyanna.
But yeah.... that's kind of all there is.

But yeah, I think the books take a different approach to relationships than most series.

And I want to know what's going on with Cat! I feel like GRRM is trolling me with A Feast for Crows— you can't drop a bombshell like that and then ignore it for the entirety of the next book! FFFUUUUUThe way the books approach relationships meshes with the setting very well. For the lion's share of the characters, practicality trumps sentiment every time. Marriage is a political maneuver meant to curry favor, to buy armies, titles or land, and it's just so completely divorced from what we consider the norm and the way it's usually portrayed in other books. I love it.

The more points people bring up about this series the more interested I am in knowing how it ends for certain character.
