I'll give you Jon and Ygritte, though. I'd completely forgotten about her, but she's one of the very few characters in the series who didn't really have an agenda of any kind.

The only real love stories in the series, imo, are Cat/Ned, Renly/Loras and Jaime/Cersei (although even that is borderline because Jaime seemed to only love this idealized version of Cersei he had in his head and when she breaks from that mold, he's kind of over it.)

It's kind of telling of how fucked up that world is that Jaime/Cersei is one of the happier romances. (I'm so upset about their break-up.) But it looks like there was a lot of idealisation going on on both sides still.
I'm not really seeing Jon/Ygritte, though I'm sure there's a certain amounts of genuine caring; but she basically blackmails him into sleeping with her, and he plans to betray her the whole time.
Renly/Loras, probably, but we never really find out if Renly was into Loras as much as Loras was into him...? (At least in book-verse, I haven't seen the show.)

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)I'm tying to think of other couples to add to your list and it's surprisingly difficult... So far all I can think of are I've got Oberyn Martell/Ellaria Sand, and Duncan Targaryen/Jenny of Oldstones( but they're before the scope of the books, so do they really count...?)
And then of course, depending on how much we want to go into rumors and fan theories, there may also be Rhaegar/Lyanna.
But yeah.... that's kind of all there is.

But yeah, I think the books take a different approach to relationships than most series.

And I want to know what's going on with Cat! I feel like GRRM is trolling me with A Feast for Crows— you can't drop a bombshell like that and then ignore it for the entirety of the next book! FFFUUUUUThe way the books approach relationships meshes with the setting very well. For the lion's share of the characters, practicality trumps sentiment every time. Marriage is a political maneuver meant to curry favor, to buy armies, titles or land, and it's just so completely divorced from what we consider the norm and the way it's usually portrayed in other books. I love it.

And when people are genuinely in love, it usually turns out to be their downfall.

Ned/Cat was the only relationship where I think both people were truly in love with one another.
Jaime/Cersei...I think they loved each other but they both loved idealized versions of each other so I'm not sure that I'd count it? There was also a good deal of obsession going on.
Renly/Loras...In the show, yes. In the books, Loras loved Renly but we never really know how Renly felt about Loras.
I could see Jaime/Brienne becoming something real, assuming GRRM takes their relationship in that direction.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 03:20 am (UTC)(link)I really think they could have a shot at something approaching the respect and depth of feeling that Ned/Catelyn have.
*is probably all by her lonesome in this ship*

:)
I love the idea of the two of them together like no other ship in the series. The only other person I know who ships them is

I do, however, think that he achieves a certain measure of self-awareness, a recognition of his Douchitude, sincere if not apologetic sounding of his failings.
I totally get it if that's not enough to wipe out the yuck.

However, all that gets Westeros is a Pocket Caligula on the throne, and the powers that be too occupied with a 5-sided civil war to prepare for the Mini Ice Age that they know for a fact is rolling in on all of them.
I'm not expecting Westeros switching over to representational democracy at the end of ASOIAF, but it will be interesting to see if any of the characters (or the smallfolk en masse) begin asking questions about how things are run on the continent. Provided that there are any noble families left; they seem to take to annihilating each other with quite a bit of gusto....

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 05:37 am (UTC)(link)I loved that their relationship in the book was basically a result of him screwing up and having to marry her out of duty. But in the TV series it looks like they're setting it up to be a ~tragedy of true love~ or something.

Jame/Cersei is not love either. It's narcissism and idealization.
Jon/Ygritte is tainted by the secrets Jon kept from her, and her blackmail to sleep with him.
On the other hand, Robb/Jeyne is definitely one couple that fits True Love. Or at least, strongly, not the means for anything any of them desires.
I'd add Garlan Tyrell and his wife. They are so normal, every time they appear I get weirded out cause they don't fit in this world XD
Tywin and Joanna seem to have loved each other strongly too. Oberyn/Ellaria too. Trystane and Myrcella seem to be heading that way, from the little we've heard.
