I disagree, kinda (for a lot of them yes, but I don't think that's ALL of em) but still. I also like that it's not overly sentimental

I love the fact that GRRM doesn't pull any punches depicting what life in a feudal society would really be like. There seems to be this idea that if we as a society switched to a "Might Makes RIght" ethos, we'd have a smoothly functioning utopia.

However, all that gets Westeros is a Pocket Caligula on the throne, and the powers that be too occupied with a 5-sided civil war to prepare for the Mini Ice Age that they know for a fact is rolling in on all of them.

I'm not expecting Westeros switching over to representational democracy at the end of ASOIAF, but it will be interesting to see if any of the characters (or the smallfolk en masse) begin asking questions about how things are run on the continent. Provided that there are any noble families left; they seem to take to annihilating each other with quite a bit of gusto....
