In a way I can see where the anti-fanficcers are coming from. I once wrote an AU in my fandom and someone liked it enough to ask to write a fic set in the same universe. And I was flattered, truly, that they liked it enough to do so, but... their fic wasn't right, the characterisation was off, the tone was wrong. I read it and couldn't help but wince. And that was only a quick-scribbled fanfic; how much more proprietary must an author who has spent months or years learning their characters and shaping their universe feel?

I'm not at all disputing the right of fanfic to exist. But I understand why it can bother authors. I think everyone would be happier if authors made a point of ignoring fanworks, and their fans did them the courtesy of not calling their attention to same.
