...I'm like that with a lot of series/authors I like. I always feel like it makes me a bit of a bad fan for preferring the fandom (and in some cases, fic if there is any) over the 'real' works. And...then I stop feeling bad. which paradoxically, I then feel guilty about. lolwut

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
there's basically no fandom for this series though :(

[identity profile] dragon-soda.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I love this series! Finished the first trilogy recently and was utterly in love with the characters!
But that she is yet another author, who's against fanfiction ... *sigh* WHY? IF I ever get published, nothing would make me more happy then having people writing fanfictions about my works:-/
and it is sad, there is no fandom :-/

[identity profile] miyuse.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
This, so much ;_;

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
There are quite a few authors who hate fan fiction. I do get how they feel, but on the other hand they can hardly control it. It makes sense to me that they just don't want other people writing about their characters, using their plots etc. Not to mention having them paired with each other in a way that you don't want them to be etc.

Still the fans aren't making money from it, well unless they are being really dodgy and I don't think many get away with selling fan fiction these days.

It's unfortunate when that happens. I prefer when authors turn a blind eye to fanfiction.

In a way I can see where the anti-fanficcers are coming from. I once wrote an AU in my fandom and someone liked it enough to ask to write a fic set in the same universe. And I was flattered, truly, that they liked it enough to do so, but... their fic wasn't right, the characterisation was off, the tone was wrong. I read it and couldn't help but wince. And that was only a quick-scribbled fanfic; how much more proprietary must an author who has spent months or years learning their characters and shaping their universe feel?

I'm not at all disputing the right of fanfic to exist. But I understand why it can bother authors. I think everyone would be happier if authors made a point of ignoring fanworks, and their fans did them the courtesy of not calling their attention to same.

[identity profile] barnabys-bane.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, this series. I really liked the first two books, but the third one had me raging. Her attitude toward fandom doesn't help warm me up to her other work, either.

[identity profile] kayfig.livejournal.com 2012-05-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I love this series, but it is unfortunate she feels that way about fanfiction, particularly since I met her at a signing a few years ago and she said she probably wouldn't be writing anymore Farseer stuff. And Fool's my favorite character so that just about kills me. D:

(Anonymous) 2012-05-05 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Her writing really doesn't do much for me. I read the Liveship Trilogy, got most of the way through the first book of the Assassin trilogy, and gave up. When I heard about her anti-fanfic rants, that just made the decision not to go on easier.

I JUST NEED. ALL THE FITZ/FOOL.

I JUST.

why robin hobb.

whhhyyy.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW.

WHY.

D:

[identity profile] kyogres.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
YES, ALL OF THIS.

Their ending made me depressed for days. Why would you do that, Robin Hobb? ;___;

I try not to read authors who I know are anti-fanfic, even though I don't really read fic any more. She's one of those authors I've always steered clear of for that reason.

Fandom as a fantastic crowdsourced PR opportunity is not something the literary world exploits enough, I feel.

[identity profile] kikkyo.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
This. I'm really not that into fanfiction either, but it's not hard to notice that most authors who are dead set against it don't have nearly the fandoms that those who allow it do. If I were publishing anything I think I'd allow fanfiction no matter how hard some (or even most) of it made me cringe, for the sake of advertisement. Sheesh.

[identity profile] checkerblob.livejournal.com 2012-05-06 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
I don't understand anti-fanfic authors in general, but rich and famous anti-fanfic authors are so hilarious to me. "THESE CHARACTERS ARE MY BABIES!!!11!!" lol shut the fuck up and go cry into your money and movie deals. I have no idea the level of wealth or fame this author has, OP, but either way, I don't blame you.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get it either. It's not hurting them. It's not hurting their "babies" or even their canons. What exactly is it doing except keeping the fans you've gained happy until the new book drops? I mean, save for some crappy in-it-for-the-money Harlequin type authors, there's usually at least a year between books. That's a long cooling off period.

I have a lot of love for Stephanie Bond, not so much because her books are so awesome because they're not exactly le Carre or anything, but she actually had a fanfiction contest. Embrace the love, authors, and you embrace the fans (and their money). Everybody wins.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 08:20 am (UTC)(link)
I totally get why they might hate it, but at the same time they can just ignore it and go check the balances on their accounts. I agree last thing you want to do is upset or turn off your fan base.

I find this whole authorial resistance to fanfic really stupid.

Diana Gaboldon with her whole why you rape my characters, yo, particularly irritates me.

She wrote a series where a cool chick falls through a Stargate ring of stones into her own personal fantasy a place where she gets to shine because of anachronistic knowledge the distant past where she falls in love with a sexy hero.

Um.

Puhlease, Diana. Don't tell me you didn't file the serial numbers off a Star Trek Guardian of Forever fic.

First off, so so so happy that there is a secret about this series! It needs more love!

But... Robin Hobb doesn't like fanfic? ;___;

As for why I didn't know this before, this series is one of the few things I've read/watched where I thought "this is flawless and therefore doesn't need to be expanded by fanon", so I haven't really gone looking for fanfic. I do wish it had a larger fandom though. For discussion, if nothing else.

I own these books in hardback, bought when they were first published along with the next couple of series.

But she completely lost with her stance on fanfiction and I haven't read anything by her for years.

I should probably sell them. I'd probably get a fair bit for them now.

(Anonymous) 2012-05-06 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That stupid anti fanfic attitude made me sight but her homophobia made me genuinely dislike her. I still love her books but she seems to be such a sucky person.
ext_18500: My non-fandom OC Oraania. She's crazy. (Ashe - sad)

[identity profile] mimi-sardinia.livejournal.com 2012-05-07 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I utterly refuse to even consider reading her books (even though some of them sound interesting) because I know about her attitude.

I actually do understand how authors can be offended by what fans do with characters in fanfic, but I have a great deal more respect to those who abstain from massive vitriol-filled public rants about it.
