I don't get it either. It's not hurting them. It's not hurting their "babies" or even their canons. What exactly is it doing except keeping the fans you've gained happy until the new book drops? I mean, save for some crappy in-it-for-the-money Harlequin type authors, there's usually at least a year between books. That's a long cooling off period.

I have a lot of love for Stephanie Bond, not so much because her books are so awesome because they're not exactly le Carre or anything, but she actually had a fanfiction contest. Embrace the love, authors, and you embrace the fans (and their money). Everybody wins.
